Usually my collages start with the background, but today I found this photo of a couple posing for the camera first. I immediately knew I would centre them. I wanted to express the joy I felt when I laid eyes on them.
After finishing, I sat back and thought ‘this didn’t exist just fifteen minutes ago’.
Isn’t that a funny thought - that we have the power to create out of nothing, to assemble something new out of old, to translate energy by combining materials?
Truthfully, before I started today I came close to not starting. It was the last thing I felt like doing. I felt no inspiration, creative urge, or desire to make anything - at all.
But I reminded myself that the truth of the creative practice is that I won’t always feel like starting.
Sometimes - in fact often - making the decision to start irrespective of my feelings is the catalyst.
Today, making the decision to start is the reason this new piece of art exists in the world - and that’s pretty cool.

I’m really enjoying these posts about your creative journey and all the feelings that come up for you as you go - I feel very seen! You’ve actually really inspired me to get into collage, something I hadn’t dabbled with since secondary school art classes. Of course I went and bought everything I could possibly need to get started 😅
I often think back to your post about aphantasia and using reference points from other creatives and feel much more free now to do that myself and not have the pressure of always creating from nothing. It’s meant the process is much more meditative for me 🧡
You got me interested in collages again as well :) a couple of years ago the book "image transfers" from Courtney Cerruti got me interested in image transfers. There is a super easy technique with package tape, I wrote a short tutorial explaining it https://open.substack.com/pub/jkadf/p/playing-with-images-transfers?r=3am0ys&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
You can get very eerie effects with it and it is a lot of fun in my opinion ^^
Also, your journey to spent less time on screen is something that is I try to incorporate more in my life as well :D thank you. I love your collages 🥰
